This Sunday sees three representative games of football being played including the headlining clash between the NSWRL Pioneers and the XXXX Queensland Rangers. The NSWRL Pioneers will play with the XXXX Queensland Rangers at Davies Park, Brisbane on Sunday, 30 June. The Pioneers will be looking for a win after their 46-16 loss in the corresponding match last season. The Pioneers coach, Matt Lantry, said the team will take a vastly different preparation approach, with a focus on team building and an increase in training time. The team will train at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence before leaving Sydney for Sunday’s game. The Pioneers team is made up of eleven players from the Newcastle Rebels and seven from the Ron Massey Cup. The team was selected after the Newcastle Rebels beat a Ron Massey Cup team in a representative match in May. Newcastle Rugby League CEO, Matt Harris, said “it is really exciting to see so many Newcastle players in the Pioneers team and that it is a reflection of the diverse talent in the Newcastle league”. Sunday will also see two Newcastle representative teams play their second game of the season at Kareela Oval, Kareela. The Emerging Rebels (under 19s) will play the Cronulla Sharks under 19s at 2pm while the Newcastle RL ladies Blues Tag team will play Cronulla’s St. Joseph squad at 1pm. St Joseph currently lead the NSWRL open ladies tag conference competition. Both teams are following a win as they both beat combined teams for the group 4 and 19 area in May earlier this year.
